Summary from C.J. Cherryh's Fiction
Location
In CJC's novel, Serpent's Reach, Cerdin was the home world of the huge ant-like Majat, who ate the first Human explorers to their planet. Later Human colonists managed to trick the Majat into allowing the establishment of a large Human colony on Cerdin by bringing in Human ova (eggs), that were used to create Beta Humans to serve the original colonists. In the novel, the original Kontrin Company settlers were given greatly extended lifespans through bio-chemicals produced by the essentially immortal Majat queens or their worker/warrior children, but the Beta Humans then developed Azi (clone) slaves with lifespans limited to 40 years in imitation of their relationship to the privileged Kontrin.
Cerdin is the third planet out from Alpha Hydri2, which is more easily referenced in current star catalogues as HR 591 or Gl 83. Alpha Hydri A is a white-yellow dwarf star (F0 V) that is hotter and brighter than our Sun, Sol, but may exhibit some variability in brightness. Spectroscopic analysis suggests that the star has a dimmer stellar companion. The star system is now believe to lie more than 71 light-years from Earth.
