Dr (not Professor) Wilhelm Gliese (known as "Mr. Nearby Stars"):
Born on 21 June 1915 in Goldberg (Schlesien = Silesia).
In 1933 started to study astronomy, mathematics and physics at the university of
Breslau, later at Berlin.
Dr. rer. nat. 1940 at Berlin.
From 1 March 1943 officially with the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut
(ARI; at that time still at Berlin, after WWII at Heidelberg).
However, on 23 March 1942 he had been already called to the front in Russia.
From 16 February 1945 to 11 September 1949 in Russian captivity.
Since October 1949 again with ARI.
1957 Observator, 1965 Hauptobservator. Retired in 1980.
Died on 12 June 1993.
Up to 1954 collaborator of the Astronomisches Jahrbuch.
From 1957 to 1980 took part in the compilation of the fundamental catalogues
(FK4, FK 5).
On 9 July 1951 Prof. Peter van de Kamp suggested him to study nearby stars.
Attended all IAU General Assemblies from 1955 to 1988.
1982 - 1985 president of IAU Commission 24 "Photographic Astrometry".
